Former Senator Scott Brown Triumphs Over Knee Pain and Gets Back in the Race

Scott Brown, a former ambassador, senator, and accomplished triathlete, has had a passion for competition his whole life. His biggest opponent for the last several years? His right knee. Scott had chronic knee pain for decades after being hit by a car, which significantly limited his range of motion, and the pain was exacerbated by arthritis. He could not walk for more than a mile without limping. Scott was determined to get back to being active.

In October 2021, a friend recommended Dr. Steven Mattheos at Sports Medicine North, saying, “You gotta go see him.” Seeking relief from his persistent knee pain, Scott consulted with Dr. Mattheos. Even after trying conservative treatments such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, stem cell treatments, and minimally invasive procedures, Scott continued to experience significant discomfort and limitations. Dr. Mattheos suggested that a total knee replacement would be Scott’s best course of action.

“Dr. Mattheos understood what I was going through because he’s a former athlete, a jock like me,” Scott said. “He’s great. His insight and experience made the process smooth from consult through recovery.”

Scott underwent a total knee replacement in January 2022. He did several months of physical therapy near his New Hampshire home and credits the Sports Medicine North team for creating a comprehensive rehabilitation plan for him to follow.

“Before the surgery, my knee wouldn’t bend all the way. Today, I have a full range of motion and no pain. Dr. Mattheos is the real deal and I’d recommend him to anyone. I’m active every day,” Scott shared.

Scott is back in the game after diligently following his rehab plan. Since his knee replacement, he has completed several races and most recently came in 3rd place in his age group.
